Toni Nadal: Rafael Nadal & Novak Djokovic will overtake Roger Federer's Slam record

Toni Nadal: Rafael Nadal & Novak Djokovic will overtake Roger Federer's Slam record

Toni Nadal, the former coach and uncle of World No. 2 Rafael Nadal, says that it is likely that Nadal and Novak Djokovic will both overtake Roger Federer in the race for most number of Grand Slam titles.

Uncle Toni says Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will both break Roger Federer's record of 20 Slams
In an interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Toni Nadal says, "I think that both Rafael and Djokovic will be able to beat Roger in the Grand Slams.

Age is on their side even though there are young people who are closing in. If Rafael won in Paris this year, he would equal Federer's 20. We will see. Nole is Rafael's toughest opponent. Because even if you play well, you never know how and when to attack him, he hardly leaves you room to hit.

On the other hand, Federer, although he is a phenomenon, has a clearer tactic and gives you more chances to hit." Out of the 19 Grand Slam singles titles won by Nadal, a record 12 of them have come at the French Open.

Uncle Toni says that his wins at the 2005 and 2010 French Opens stood out as the most important. "Out of Rafael's 12 Roland Garros I keep his first victory in 2005. He was very young and it was his most coveted goal.

He achieved it after much work, effort and self-denial. His victory in 2010 was also very important . It had so much emotional impact like the first one, because Rafa had lost to Soderling the year before. It was a shocking defeat for us as Rafael was looking for his fifth title in Paris.

The first thing my nephew in the locker room told me was: 'next year's goal is to be the best on clay again. 'And so he did." Rafael Nadal turns 34 years old on June 3rd. He usually celebrates his birthday at Roland Garros but due to the current global crisis, he is currently at his academy.

Nadal has currently won 19 Grand Slam singles titles, which is one short of the all-time record held by Roger Federer, who has 20 Grand Slams. Novak Djokovic, the current World No. 1 player, has won 17 Grand Slam titles so far.
